Searchbench

The short list of what this site learns about you

Searchbench is a stack of static pages. There is no account, no form, no newsletter and nothing to fill in, so the list of what it collects is unusually short.

What Searchbench collects directly

Nothing. Pages here are plain files served to your browser. There is no login, no comment box, no quote request, no mailing list and no form of any kind on any page, so there is no moment at which you hand this site a detail about yourself.

If you email the address on the contact page, that email sits in an inbox like any other email, and it is used to answer you. It is not added to a list, because there is no list.

What the server sees

Any web server records the requests it answers. The host serving these pages logs the usual technical details — the address requested, the time, the browser's user-agent string and the network address the request came from. Those records exist so the site can be kept running and attacks can be spotted, and they age out on the host's own schedule.

Storage in your browser

Searchbench stores nothing in your browser. No cookie is written by these pages, no tracking pixel is embedded, and no analytics script runs. Nothing on this site follows you to another one.

That is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight, and it has a cost: this site genuinely does not know which of its pages you read. Decisions about what to write here come from the questions readers email in, not from a dashboard.

Some outbound links on this site are partner links, written as /go/ addresses. Following one sends your browser to the vendor, and the vendor's own systems can then record that you arrived via Searchbench — which is how a commission is attributed at all.

From that moment you are on the vendor's site and under the vendor's privacy policy, not this one. Which links are partner links and which are not is set out in full on the disclosure page; many of the tools recommended most often here have no partner arrangement and no tracking to attach.

Fonts and files

Typefaces, illustrations and stylesheets are served from the same place as the pages, not from a font network or a content delivery network belonging to somebody else. Loading a page here does not make a request to any third party.

Changes, and how to ask

If any of the above changes, the page you are reading changes with it, and the date on this page moves. Anything unclear can go to the address on the contact page.
