AI SEO tools: three different products wearing one label

The short answer

Three unrelated products are currently sold as "AI SEO tools", and confusing them is how people buy the wrong one. They are:

  1. Writing and optimisation assistants — software that helps produce or improve a page.
  2. AI-visibility trackers — software that watches whether your brand appears in answers from assistants like ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews.
  3. Existing SEO tools with AI features added — a suite you already know, now with a prompt box and some generated summaries.

Only the second is genuinely new. The first is the on-page category with a generator attached, and the third is a feature list rather than a product. Sorting which one you actually want takes two minutes and saves a subscription.

Type one: writing and optimisation assistants

These sit closest to the on-page job — read the pages that rank, tell you what your draft lacks, and increasingly draft the missing parts for you.

The useful part is the analysis. The generation is where it gets dangerous, not because generated text is inherently bad, but because the thing these tools optimise for is resemblance to what already ranks. Generating a page that closely resembles ten existing pages produces, precisely, an eleventh version of something the web already has.

Search engines have spent the past two years publishing guidance aimed at exactly this pattern. Treat the drafting features as a way to get past a blank page, and expect to rewrite what comes out.

Type two: AI-visibility trackers — the genuinely new category

This is the one worth understanding, because the question behind it is real: when somebody asks an assistant about your subject, does your brand come up?

The tools work by running a list of prompts repeatedly and recording what the assistants say — whether you are mentioned, in what context, alongside which competitors. Vendors describe this in their own vocabulary. Surfer's plan descriptions, read on its pricing page on 24 September 2026, talk about tracking "AI Prompts" at a stated refresh frequency, "Mention Gap and Brand Sentiments" and "Brand Spaces". Semrush's plans, read the same day, list "prompts to track daily", "AI visibility reports" and an "AI-ready Site Audit".

Two things to hold onto before spending money here.

First, this is monitoring, not optimisation. A tracker tells you what assistants currently say. Nothing in any of these products tells you how to change it, because nobody outside those companies knows how the answers are assembled.

Second, the numbers are samples. A prompt tracked daily is one asking of one question, and assistant answers vary between sessions, accounts and regions. A "share of voice" figure built on that is a rough indicator, not a measurement, and no vendor publishes an error margin for it.

Type three: AI features inside tools you already pay for

The least glamorous and most likely to be the right answer. If your suite has added prompt tracking, check what your current plan includes before buying a separate product.

Read on 24 September 2026, the AI-visibility allowances built into the plans this site links looked like this:

AI-prompt allowances included in plans, as each vendor's own pricing page describes them
PlanPublished priceWhat the page says about AI tracking
Surfer Standard$99 USD per month, billed yearly25 AI prompts, refreshed weekly
Surfer Pro$182 USD per month, billed yearly50 AI prompts, refreshed daily; 5 brand spaces
Surfer AI Search Analytics$82 USD per month, billed yearly50 AI prompts refreshed daily; mention gap and sentiment
Semrush Starter$199 a month, or $165.17 billed annually50 prompts to track daily; 1 domain for AI brand performance
Semrush Pro+$299 a month, or $248.17 billed annually100 prompts to track daily
Semrush Advanced$549 a month, or $455.67 billed annually200 prompts to track daily

Two notes on that table. Every Surfer figure is a yearly-billed rate — its pricing page does not publish a month-to-month rate at all. And the Semrush link on this site is a placeholder that pays nothing: its partner programme requires monthly traffic Searchbench has not reached, so no sentence here depends on a commission.

What nobody can sell you

A method for ranking in AI answers. The retrieval and synthesis behind assistant answers is not documented in the way search ranking factors are, and the systems change without notice. Anyone offering a reliable technique is selling a hypothesis.

A stable measurement. Ask the same assistant the same question twice and you may get two answers. Trackers sample; they do not measure.

A replacement for the basics. Every credible account of how these systems find information has them relying on the ordinary web — pages that exist, can be crawled, and say clearly what they are about. Which means the free tools remain the foundation: Google Search Console for whether your pages are indexed at all, and Bing Webmaster Tools, whose index a number of assistants draw on. Both are free and neither pays this site anything.

How to decide, in four questions

  1. Do I need help writing, or help finding out? Writing assistants and visibility trackers are different purchases. Buying one when you wanted the other is the commonest mistake in this category.
  2. Does my current subscription already include it? Check the plan page before adding a bill. Several suites now bundle prompt tracking at tiers people are already on.
  3. Would I act on the answer? If a report said your brand was absent from assistant answers, what would you change on Monday? If there is no answer to that, the report is expensive entertainment.
  4. Is the rest of the house in order? If pages are not indexed, a visibility tracker will faithfully report that assistants have never heard of you.

That last one is worth taking literally. The tool map puts the six ordinary jobs in order, and three of them are answered free before any of this becomes relevant.

A word about the claims

Nothing on this site has been tested, and that applies with particular force here. No AI-visibility tool's output has been checked against anything at Searchbench, no accuracy claim is repeated as fact, and where a vendor describes its own features the words are quoted and attributed.

That is not a hedge. It is the difference between telling you what a company says it sells and telling you it works — and in a category this young, only one of those is knowable.

Next: at the other end of the market, what actually changes at the enterprise tier — including the one published price in this category that is not a sales conversation.

AI SEO tool questions

What are AI SEO tools?
Three different things share the label. Writing assistants help produce or improve pages and are really the on-page category with a generator attached. AI-visibility trackers watch whether your brand appears in answers from assistants, which is a genuinely new job. And established SEO suites have added AI features to plans you may already pay for. Decide which of the three you want before comparing prices, because they are not substitutes.
Can any tool get you ranked in AI answers?
No tool can promise that, and none of the ones named here claims to. Assistant answers are assembled by systems whose retrieval is not documented the way search ranking is, and they change without notice. What the tools do is monitor — they report what assistants currently say about you. Changing it is not something anyone outside those companies can give you a reliable method for.
How much do AI visibility tools cost?
Read on 24 September 2026, Surfer's AI Search Analytics plan was $82 USD per month captioned "Billed yearly", with 50 AI prompts refreshed daily; its Standard plan at $99 included 25 prompts weekly. Semrush's Starter plan listed 50 prompts tracked daily at $199 a month or $165.17 billed annually, rising to 200 prompts on Advanced at $549 or $455.67. Check what your existing subscription already includes first.
Are AI visibility scores reliable?
Treat them as samples rather than measurements. A tracked prompt is one asking of one question, and assistant answers vary between sessions, accounts and regions, so a share-of-voice figure built from them is an indicator with an unpublished error margin. Nothing on this site has tested any of these tools, and no vendor's accuracy claim is repeated here as fact.
Should I buy an AI SEO tool before the basics?
No. If your pages are not indexed, a visibility tracker will accurately report that assistants have never encountered you, and you will have paid to learn something Google Search Console tells you free. Get indexing, crawling and your own search performance in order first — three of those answers cost nothing — and then decide whether the monitoring is worth a subscription.

Not sure which of these six jobs you are actually trying to do? That is what the tool map — SEO software sorted by job is for, and the free tools page covers what you can get done before paying anyone, including Searchbench’s partners.
